What are triglycerides? Triglycerides are a fatty substance occurring naturally in animal and vegetable tissues. They play an important role in metabolism as an energy source. Tricylcerides contain twice as much energy as carbohydrates, but too much triglyceride in the body can thicken the blood resulting in sluggish blood flow and less oxygen and nutrients being delivered to the heart. Additionally, high levels of triglycerides in the bloodstream have been linked to atherosclerosis. Source: American Heart Association Heart Disease & Stroke Statistics (2005 Update) |
